In May, South Africa’s headline Consumer Price Index inflation rate held steady at 2.8% year-on-year, matching the Bloomberg market consensus. At 3.0% y-o-y, core inflation, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, also remained unchanged in May.

The Minerals Council South Africa’s members represent 90% of the country’s mineral production, contributing to an industry valued at around R1 trillion in 2024. Representing a diverse range of minerals, our members, including three associations, play a vital role in shaping a thriving and multi-faceted mining sector.
As a membership organisation, the Minerals Council South Africa amplifies the collective voice of its members, ensuring greater influence in engagements with government and key stakeholders.
Our members benefit from being part of a respected organisation that represents the industry on prominent local and international platforms, including BUSA, Nedlac, MHSC, MQA, NECOM, and global bodies like ICMM, MIASA, WPIC, and FutureCoal, to advance sustainable, responsible mining.
Our skills development team works closely with government, industry bodies, and educational institutions to shape training programmes, improve qualifications, and ensure that skills development meets industry demands. From foundational education to advanced technical training, we support every level of workforce growth, enhancing job opportunities, retention, and sector-wide expertise.
Through certifications in Advance Mine Valuation, Elementary Mine Sampling, and Strata Control, only to name a few, we help equip professionals with the skills needed to thrive in a competitive and evolving mining sector.
Administered by the Minerals Council, these certifications equip candidates with the knowledge and confidence to excel in their roles and advance to senior positions. Through structured training and practical experience, these qualifications help build a highly skilled and competent mining workforce.
Through Khumbul’ekhaya, meaning “remember home”, we drive a CEO-led strategy that places the well-being of workers at the heart of our Zero Harm mission—promoting a holistic approach to eliminating fatalities and injuries, improving training, and learning from global best practice to better understand and prevent occupational incidents.
Our Masoyise Health Programme goes beyond occupational risks, tackling TB, HIV, and other health challenges to protect and strengthen the people who work in our mining industry. It supports health targets, promotes collaboration, and improves monitoring to assist in uplifting overall employee well-being across the mining sector.
Mining Industry Occupational Safety and Health (MOSH) drives the adoption of leading practices in four critical areas: Dust, Noise, Fall of Ground, and Transport and Machinery. Through the MOSH Learning Hub, industry collaboration is strengthened, addressing health and safety challenges to accelerate progress toward Zero Harm.
The Minerals Council South Africa is committed to meaningful transformation in the mining sector, ensuring that it benefits all stakeholders, from workers to communities. We actively engage with government, industry leaders, and local communities to drive progress in community development and Women in Mining, among others. Through advocacy and collaboration, we support the goals of the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act (MPRDA) and the Mining Charter, working to create a more inclusive, equitable, and sustainable industry.

Women in Mining
Launched in 2020, the initiative drives industry-wide strategies to increase female representation and promote decisions that benefit both women and the mining sector.
