Addressing Gender-Based Violence and Workplace Harassment

A LEGAL PERSPECTIVE

The Minerals Council Women in Mining (WiM) hosted this thought-provoking workshop on Friday, 12 September 2025.  The event brought together leading legal experts from Webber Wentzel, HR professionals, and workplace advocates for a critical dialogue on how the mining industry can confront gender-based violence (GBV) and harassment through law, policy, and practical action.

The session provided an in-depth exploration of:

  • The legal frameworks governing workplace GBV and harassment.
  • Employer obligations, accountability, and liabilities.
  • Best practice approaches for handling complaints and investigations with integrity and care.
  • Real-world case studies and lessons learned.
  • Survivor-centred and intersectional strategies to support affected employees.

The workshop created space for open and honest discussion, equipping participants from HR, legal, management, and advocacy backgrounds with practical insights to strengthen workplace responses to GBV and harassment. A recurring theme was the need for mining companies to not only comply with legal requirements but to foster cultures of dignity, respect, and accountability where employees feel safe to report concerns.

By combining legal expertise with lived experiences and organisational perspectives, the workshop reinforced the Minerals Council’s commitment to advancing gender equity and ensuring workplaces across the mining sector are safe, fair, and inclusive.
